Prof.Sirimali Fernando started her career as a MBBS qualified medical practitioner in 1982. . She started her academic career as a lecturer in Microbiology in 1985 in the Medical Faculty of University of Ruhuna and was subsequently promoted to senior lecturer in 1993. The NAM S&T Center (Center for Science and Technology of Non-Aligned and other Developing Countries), India, which offers training opportunities for scientists and technologists of its member countries, recently forwarded us the SFSA Conference for this year (SFSA 2018) announcement, ( Science Forum South Africa (SFSA 2018): Igniting Conversations about Science, Pretoria, 12-14 December 2018 ) NASTEC, being the focal point of NAM S&T Center, is pleased to circulate this announcement (attached) to you, inviting interested individuals to apply.
You or your nominee's application needs to be forwarded to the Acting Director, National science & Technology Commission for authorization. Any application sent directly to NAM S & T center or through any other agency except NASTEC, will be rejected by them.
In matter of selection, the decision of NAM S&T Center will be the final.

Greetings from the Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre)!!
In continuation of the tradition of the sponsorship of senior academicians, researchers and science administrators by the NAM S&T Centre for participation in the Science Forum South Africa (SFSA) conferences hosted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Republic of South Africa in the last three consecutive years, we are pleased to announce that the DST has once again invited the NAM S&T Centre to sponsor appropriate persons from the developing countries to attend the SFSA Conference for this year (SFSA 2018) that would be held on 12-14 December 2018 at the CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria, South Africa.
The strategic objectives of SFSA 2018, themes to be covered under various sessions and other details may be seen in the Forum website www.sfsa.co.za.
We are pleased to invite the member countries of the NAM S&T Centre and other developing countries to nominate senior science administrators, STI policy makers and S&T development professionals to attend the vibrant debate during the Science Forum South Africa. In view of the expected policy level deliberations in the SFSA, it will be highly appreciated if nominations of senior persons at the level of Vice-Minister, Principal Secretary, President / Vice- President of Science Academies or Councils, CEOs of R&D institutions, Heads of Planning and International S&T Cooperation etc. are forwarded to us for representing their countries in this Conference.
The following may please be noted:
(a) The last date for submission of applications to attend the SFSA 2018 is Monday, 12th November 2018.
(b) The selection will be made strictly on the basis of the academic background and professional experience of the applicants, as will be seen from the documents to be submitted by them. It may be noted that only ten (10) seats are available for sponsorship by the NAM S&T Centre for this event.
i) An extended (about 3-4 pages) abstract (in MS Word format) of a scientific paper relevant to the themes of the Science Forum South Africa.
ii) A short (maximum two pages) CV (in MS Word format; .pdf or image files shall not be accepted).
iii) Copy of the relevant pages of passport (i.e. pages showing identity, photo and date of expiry of the passport)
(d) Free local hospitality, including accommodation, meals and airport transfers will be provided by the SFSA organisers/DST, South Africa to the foreign participants from Sunday, 11th December (Noon) to Thursday, 15th December 2018 (Noon). The participants should arrange their flight schedules accordingly; otherwise, they will have to make their own arrangement of stay beyond these days.
(e) For applications received from member countries of the NAM S&T Centre, and the S&T-Industry Network Members of the NAM S&T Centre, which do not have outstanding dues against their membership subscription: The NAM S&T Centre will provide return international airfare by Excursion Class by Shortest Route to only one official nominee of each country/Network Member, provided the application is routed through the Focal Point of the NAM S&T Centre in the applicant’s country/Network Member. Further, the international ticket will have to be purchased by the applicant (or his organisation) in the first instance with prior approval of the price from the NAM S&T Centre, which will be reimbursed by the NAM S&T Centre after completion of the visit.
In this connection, the Focal Points may please note that the NAM S&T Centre will consider only one official nomination from a member country/Network Member for full financial support by the Centre, subject to the availability of seats and the applicant fulfilling all the above stated criteria. Any additional nominations from the Focal Points may also be considered subject to the availability of seats, but such applicants would have to arrange for their international fare.
(f) For applications received from the member countries of the NAM S&T Centre and S&T-Industry Network Members of the NAM S&T Centre which are defaulting on the payment of their annual dues and from the non-member countries and any other applicants in their individual capacity (other than from South Africa): Selected applicants from those of the member countries/Network Members that are overdue on the payment of their annual subscription or from the non-member countries will make their own arrangement for international travel.
(g) Information on the member countries and S&T-Industry Network members of the NAM S&T Centre and names/addresses of the Focal Points may be seen on the Centre’s website www.namstct.org.
(h) English will be the official language of the SFSA 2018.
As far as possible, all correspondence may please be made by email. Kindly avoid sending us fax messages or hard copies to save paper and energy.
All documents may be prepared in MS-Word Format or electronically scanned and sent as attachments to the email.
